Spent their childhood at Le Havre, where in 1899 he had been apprenticed to a painter-decorator. Through his relationship with Raoul Dufy and Friesz started in 1906 to decorate in a style, but in 1907-8 consuming Picasso's 'Demoiselles d'Avignon' and Cézanne, began to use a far more restrained palette of vegetables, browns and greys, simplified his types, and painted his first Cubist photographs. First one-man exhibition on Galerie Kahnweiler, Paris, 1908. Close friendship with Picasso 1909-14, leading to the combined development of analytical and synthetic Cubism plus . During his war solution 1914-16 had been seriously wounded. His later paintings included numerous compositions of nevertheless lifes and interiors with contrasting habits and much more complex outcomes of space, including a few 'Studios' begun in 1948. Designed design for a couple of ballets, including Les Fâcheux 1923-4. Awarded First reward at the 1937 Pittsburgh International in addition to main painting reward during the 1948 Venice Biennale. Died in Paris.
