Artist Quirk - quirky facts about the arts by Morgan Bell

What is art? What inspires artists? Who do artists inspire? An examination of all that is creative: actors, writers, musicians, painters, thespians, designers, performers . . . is life imitating art? Will the modern artist survive being imitated?

feminine tattoos on celebrity women

May 31st 2008 11:34

Do you remember when having a tattoo used to be strictly taboo?

Women who had tattoos were catagorised as drug-dealers, bikies, jailbirds, gang-members or workers from the wharves . . . women with tattoos were marked women who could not operate in social circles of "normal" society . . . women with tattoos were rough and tough and butch!

Well now some of the most beautiful women in the world are choosing to sport tattoos and selecting elegant designs that enhance their femininity. Tattoos can now be sexy and delicate and unique rather than the epitome of vulgar as some once thought they were.

Here is a selection of successful women from the entertainment industry who proudly bare tattoos

These women regularly attend red carpet events and openings wearing designer gowns with their tattos clearly shown. When taking on acting roles, appearing in photographs or on film their tattoos can be covered with makeup or airbrushed out later if deemed inappropriate for the character or tone of the piece.

Performers are increasingly feeling free to tattoo themselves as they please without losing work or credibility.

How times have changed . . .

It's amazing how perceptions of things like tattoos can change over time although I've noticed that although in many movies / shows the tattoos aren't an issue but with others they're covered by makeup. I guess it depends on the role. That's the thing about how good makeup is these days, they can cover anything so people can feel free to adorn their bodies as they please.

I have to say it depends on the tattoo, some can look quite beautiful and others just look nasty. You have to be pretty sure of what you get because you're stuck with it!

hi Cheryl,
yeah its almost as though they are able to be a fashion accessory because they arent as permanent as they one were . . . apart from getting them lasered off when you are sick of them you are right about the makeup being an amazing quality nowadays!
i was surprised to learn that the whole cast of Charmed has tattoos but they just airbrush them out . . . amazing, just amazing!

apparently tattoos are becoming passe. the new thing is 'scarification' where you actually get the design etched into your skin. Really Long Link

Ive always wanted one, since teenage years....Mum was all "no no and more no"....A few years ago one of her horses died and she had his name tattoed on her hip. She beat me!

I want a particular image from the 'evangelion' movie - Eva 2 cradling the last angel in its arms. I only want it small and basic and I want to sketch my own version of it, so its going to take some time! I did want it on the back of my neck but thats way too popular now, I have to find somewhere different, I hate following the crowd!

Interesting. I would never do that to my body because I crave change - I would get sick of seeing the same design day in and day out.

hey Ruby,
thanks for the link
yeah scarification turns my stomache, im such a sook haha
Whitney had a good article on it on Alternative Look
CLICKHERE for "Scarring and Scarification"
looks very painful!

hi Kleo,
yeah its something i always think about and then chicken out!
that would be brilliant if you could design your own tattoo, so unique!
i think the pelvis bone/lower abdomen tats look nice as they flow into the public reason but they probably look nicer on the rake thin celebrities than they would on me . . . perhaps you could pull it of?

hi epiphanie,
maybe you could get a henna tattoo?
you know what i love, those sleeve tattoos (cos im such a bloke haha), i like the one Ana Matronic out of Scissor Sisters has too . . . its not the permanance i fear, its to pain!

I love how celebs show off their tats instead of hiding them when on the red carpet. I think it will help make tattoos, piericings, and other mods more acceptable seeing that so many people do it. I think body mods are a wonderful form of expression.

hi Whitney
speak of the devil lol
i agree with you, it all adds to diversity and acceptance of people who look different to yourself . . . i admire those brave enough to break the pain barrier and get something truly unique . . . i thought Angelina was the only one into it but when i had a little research it turns out the trend is quite widespread!
thanks for stopping in and sharing your opinion!

Ha!
I doubt it! But a rake thin mate of mine got a scorpion there - shes a scorpio and wanted a particular one and got talked into a different size....I think he's a bit big, but suits her personality.

hey Kleo
the scorpian idea is really fantastic . . . im a virgo though so i think a picture of a fair maiden with bedroom eyes in that region would be far less empowering than a creature with a poison spike!

Morgan, yes Alyssa Milano has several tattoos; I want to say over 13, but I don't remember. I can't wait for my next tattoo.

hey Whitney,
how many do you have now?
i saw Alyssa had a few on her back and one on each of her wrists and ankles, and she has the lower abdomen/ pubic area one aswell . . . she must love getting them, i think she makes them look really classy!
i think Eva Longoria is tattooed now too . . . soon even Hillary Clinton will be! haha

Currently just 2. One on my wrist and on on my back shoulder blade. The one on my back needs to be shaded in, as it's just an outline as of now. I'll probably get on on my other shoulder blade, and I'll pobably have my scars on my hands covered to make them darker. I have a star on one hand and a tear on the other, and I want thme a little darker, probably a dark peach; basically I want them to look like scars by darker. I can't bare to have them re-done as deeper scars.

I seems like everyone is getting tattooed, I forget the woman's name, but she was on Ellen a few weeks ago, some big singer, and she has just gotten her first tattoo, same with her husband (Nick Cannon).

You are right, Hillary is next.

By the way I just saw you posted a link to my scarification post. Thanks.

Beautiful, i have to admit, I have a few too many, I spent years hiding them from my parents, only to be dismayed that my mother LOVES all my tattoo's becuase she never had the courage, go figure....

i had the most bazaar experience last night, a really old friend is here visiting, he excitedly showed me his new creation on his back, and it was almost IDENTICAL to my recent work, and in the same spot...we both drew them ourselves, i got like goose bumps. We knew we were connected in life before that but now we really know. its a mixed up crazy world.

Cool post.
