goth rocker Marilyn Manson and his watercolour gallery
May 10th 2008 07:52
Marilyn Manson (born Brian Warner 1969) has named his self-proclaimed art movement Celebritarian Corporation and coined a slogan for the movement: “We will sell our shadow to those who stand within it.”
Marilyn's debut exhibition the Golden Age of Grotesque Art Show was held Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 September 2002 in Los Angeles, USA. Paintings were created from 1997 right up to one he finished a week before the exhibition
Over fifty paintings were on display, and over thirty of them were sold. The works were mostly watercolours but also some mixed media. Prices for the artwork ranged from $1000 up to $55,000 for the painting Die Deutsche Kampferin, which he deliberately priced highly. Reluctant to part with his creations, Manson said 'I don't want to sell any of them, but I have to let go at some point.'

Manson opened his own art gallery in 2006 called the Celebritarian Corporation Gallery Of Fine Art.
Further exhibitions of Mansons works have been at:
- Space 39, an art gallery in downtown Fort Myers (2007)
- Brigitte Schenk Gallery Artshow, 'Les Fleurs du Mal' in Cologne, Germany (2007)
- Galeria Romero Britto Artshow, Sao Paulo, Brazil. (2007)
- M&J Guelman Gallery, 'Evil Blooms in Watercolor', Vinzavod Arts Center, Moscow, Russia. (2007)
- Cabaret Voltaire, Zurich, Switzerland. (2007-08)
Manson's artworks are available to buy from the Aptivea Gallery in Florida, USA.

Art in America's Max Henry likened Manson's watercolour paintings to the works of a "psychiatric patient given materials to use as therapy" and said his work would never be taken seriously in a fine-art context, writing that the value was "in their celebrity, not the work".
Manson has appeared in the films Lost Highway, Jawbreaker, Party Monster, and Bowling For Columbine and his band (also named Marilyn Manson) has released six studio albums:
1994 Portrait of an American Family
1996 Antichrist Superstar
1998 Mechanical Animals
2000 Holy Wood (in the shadow of the valley of death)
2003 The Golden Age of Grotesque
2007 Eat Me, Drink Me

"I wasn't intending for any of these pieces to be for anybody but myself or the friends that I did portraits of and would give as gifts. I never intended to show them, much less sell them, until several years of paintings built up. And when people would come to my house, they would urge me to show people my art.
So I took the step and I did it, and I've been quite proud of and surprised by the support and interest, especially from younger fans who may not have gotten into art at such an early age. Maybe this will encourage them to take a look at other things."

Marilyn Manson
Manson's work highlights a trend in contemporary painting which does not seek to glorify the painted subject as something it's not, but instead to visually speak of the subjects painted with a new rawness and blood-wrenching honesty. With vibrant colors dripping, muddy tones and splattered abstractions Manson owns his own voice as a powerful visual artist.....He has landed where few artists dare to tread, near an embankment where unmistakable political and psychological themes run colorfully mad."

his work does have a very naive quality to it hey?
some of the works were used in his album cover art and poster designs and film clips so we will never really know how much his visual arts contributed to his musical branding . . . a huge part of mansons success was the visual appeal of him as a person and of all his products . . . the marketing of the music industry, it is always hard to seperate the artist from the celebrity . . .
