Issues of Age: Jamie L. Alonzo

ARTIST STATEMENT

It was 2 a.m. when I was awakened by the door bell followed by a frantic knocking. Everyone in the house roused to see who was at the door and what was happening. My father opened the door to find our neighbor standing on the porch. While apologizing for the late hour of his visit, he explained that my grandfather had gotten out of the house. My mother pushed her way out the door, only to be shocked and mortified by what she found. Grandfather was standing in the neighbor’s yard with his pants around his ankles urinating on their lawn! Our neighbor then told us how my grandfather woke them by trying to get into their home, terrifying his wife and children. My mother immediately began herding her father, who required much convincing, back into the house. She was eventually able to put him back to bed, but had to check on him throughout the night to be certain he would not escape again.

As an artist, I am interested in the different stages of life and how our elder years are similar to our infant years. In old age, people start to lose the physical and mental capacity to care for themselves. Similarly, when we are young we have not yet developed the ability to care for ourselves. With my ceramic figures I hope to challenge the viewer to reflect on issues of age.
