Scribblings of a Criminal Mind
September 12th 2008 15:55
My favourite nerdy character on TV at the moment is Dr Spencer Reid on Criminal minds. Spencer is a profiler with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) at Quantico, Virginia who has a super-memory and was a child genius who studied at an accelerated pace. Spencer, not surprisingly, is socially awkward, but as the series has progressed his character has become increasingly complex - he fears inheriting the mental illness that runs in his family, and he has developed a substance abuse problem due to the stress of his job.
Dr Spencer Reid is played by 28 year old artist and former model Matthew Gray Gubler.
Matthew Gray Gubler is a budding film-maker and sketch artist. Gubler began modelling with DNA Modelling Agency to help pay for his tuition in the arts - he has been a fashion model for Tommy Hilfiger, Sisley, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, and other major designers. At the peak of his modelling career Gubler was named a Top 50 Model.
Gubler has his own web page (yes "page" singular, it is just one long page, not a multi-page site) which can be found HERE. The web page is scans of a hand-written diary which chronicles his break being selected for the part of Dr Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds (originally named Quantico) and compiling many examples of his sketch art.
Here is a selection of images by Matthew Gray Gubler:
Gubler voiced the character of Simon in the animated childrens film Alvin & The Chipmunks (2007)
Short movies Matthew Gray Gubler has made:
- The Cactus That Looked Just Like A Man
- Claude: A Symphony of Horror
- Dead or Retarded
- Tippi's Picnic
- Popems
- My Favourite Friend
- Matthew Gray Gubler's Intern Journal (available exclusively on the Criterion Collection DVD of "The Life Aquatic")
** write Matthew an email on matthewgraygubler @ gmail.com to order a copy of his newest DVD (apparently he may charge you "5 bucks")

And WOW to his paintings and art - it has a Tim Burton feel to it but he uses way more colors. LOVE IT!

His work reminds a bit of the Art Brut Frenchman, international citizen, factory-worker, and man of letterboxes, Jean Dubuffet (go HERE).
Dubuffet, now that's my idea of French art

look i didnt even call him McAvoy ONE time! haha
im getting better . . .
i can see what you mean about a "Tim Burton feel", some of them have a creepy sinister feel to them - not as creepy or sinister as Marilyn Manson's watercolours
hi Norm,
nerds unite!
i was very impressed with the self-portrait of his character on Criminal Minds, and the little framed reptilian type creatures!
thanks for the link, the artwork on the other side of it is fantastic!

Nice post. I love the show, the character, and the actor. He has so much talent on so very many levels. It is good t see that from someone who most people only know as a TV actor.
If they killed him off in that season finale last year I am going to be extremely upset. (I think I saw him in commercials for the premiere coming up, although I think they may have shown the entire team in the ads to keep the suspense going.)

Dear matthewgraygubler@gmail.com,
Where have you been all my life? I make short films too. That means we are perfect for each other. I can't draw but will be happy to sharpen your pencils. In other words, will you marry me?
love always,
Ruby

We might have to devise a secret nerd handshake. Or, maybe a nerd headshake, milkshake, bootyshake. Something, anything.
Leunig it reminds me a bit of too.

dont steal my nerds! haha
although i guess you would be well suited with the film-making and general personal flair . . . invite me to the wedding!
(you didnt really send him that email did you? haha)
hi Cheryl,
ahhh Leunig - yes!
i find it really interesting when actors and songwriters are visual artists aswell . . . it always reminds me of John Lennon and his film-making and visual arts, they say if he wasnt successful with music he would have been successful in another artistic medium, creativity was just in his blood! (and a few other chemicals haha)
hi Norm,
my milkshake brings all the nerds to the yard!
