Susan Cafarelli Burke

One of Susan’s earliest memories, at five years old, was her self-portrait in finger paints. Although she lacked early opportunity, she always kept her interest in art. Susan earned an AA in graphic arts and later a BA in History. Her formal art career began as a graphic artist and designer. She worked for fifteen years designing promotional marketing materials. She later studied and received an MA in Theology and Art and became a humanities instructor in the California Community College system.

Through all this, the voice of fine art kept whispering. The transformation began with one watercolor class. Then, Susan took several painting seminars in Italy. “The exhilaration that came from painting everyday changed my life and I became more and more determined to be a professional artist.” Susan began taking classes in fine art at her local community college and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at San Jose State University in California.

She now works as a full-time painter in her studio in Scotts Valley, California. Susan is comfortable working in oils, acrylics, and pastels but has a special affinity for watercolor. Her subjects and vision involve the natural world, myth, symbolism, feminism, environmentalism, and theology. Her goal is to turn every painting into a prayer.

“ I have loved all my various experiences from designing brochures, to teaching comparative religions. My history and interests continue to feed and contribute to my artistic growth. I realize now, that fine art combined with theology is where I feel the most alive.”
